The Safety City U.S.A. facility, which was designed specifically for fire safety training, includes a home replica with living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Through the instruction of a firefighter, each room provides children with opportunities to identify and lean about household and fire hazards, which could threaten them and the lives of their families. Students are encouraged to identify numerous hazards that could result in fire, electrocution, scald burns, poisoning, slips and falls. The bedroom, which is specially equipped with a safe smoke machine, fills with thick, realistic smoke and provides the children the opportunity to learn to stay below the smoke and to practice climbing out a window to safety. Children are taught the life-saving importance of working smoke detectors and fire escape plans. Children and encouraged to share their knowledge with parents and siblings, and to practice at home what they have been taught at Safety City U.S.A.

Safety City U.S.A. also provides an indoor park-life setting where a police officer instructs students in personal safety. One of the offerings for the police portion of the programs is Stranger Danger. This program is geared toward children 5-9 years of age. Children are taught to be aware of their surroundings, to walk as part of agroup, and never to approach a stranger or a vehicle in which a stranger is trying to engage them in conversation. They are taught strategies for reacting to strangers who approach or try to touch them. Examples of the numerous tricks strangers may use to lure them close enough to grab are shared in this personal safety program.

The Internet can be a valuable resource for children. However, children can encounter dangerous situations on the Internet, from viewing inappropriate materials to being asked for face-to-face meetings with strangers. This course, targeting students 10-15 years of age, is taught be police personnel. Its purpose is to give children and teens information on how to stay safe while using the Internet. The course stresses refraining from providing personal information to strangers, staying off sites where strangers may join in on conversations and falsely portray themselves as teens or friends, how and why to use care and caution when divulging personal information on sites such as Facebook and MySpace.

This camp offers children the opportunity to learn valuable safety lessons while having lots of fun. Offered in week-long, half-day sessions, Safety City provides children (6 - 9 years) with life-saving educational lessons and activities on many safety topics.
Each day's activities cover a different safety theme. Themes include fire safety day, police safety day (which includes stranger danger and bullying awareness), bike/helmet/pedestrian safety day, swim and water safety day and wild backyard animal safety day at the Detroit Zoo.

Bullying has been identified as one of the leading contributing factors of teen suicide and student-on-student violence inschools. Bullying type behaviors, cyber-bullying and legal consequences of bullying are described and discussed by police personnel in this program. Tolerance of differences and behaviors which are inclusive to all classmatesare stressed. Steps to take if a student finds him/herself the victim ofbullying are also discussed. Role-playing and group discussion are techniques used to engage participants in this class geared toward 8-12 year old students.

Bike/Helmet/Pedestrian Safety ProgramIn this program, offered early spring through early fall,police personnel teach children about bicycle and pedestrian safety. Rules ofthe road, proper arm signal usage, bike safety gear, and careful observation before crossing the street are discussed and demonstrated. Students are taught the life-saving and head injury prevention importance of using a properly fitted helmet every time they get on a bicycle, scooter, rollerblades or skateboard. Since a properly fitted bicycle helmet is important to all riders' safety, students are encouraged to bring their helmets with them from home for a trained staff member to check for good condition and proper fit.
This program is offered during Summer Safety Camp. One day of summer camp is devoted to Bike/Helmet/Pedestrian Safety. For bicycle safety instruction, a road and the street scape is designed and assembled, complete with street signs, to help simulate situations that students may encounter as pedestrians and bicyclists. This street scape affords them the ability to practice newly learned skills in a safe and controlled setting.

This program was designed for children 13 and under who are occasionally responsible for younger siblings for short periods of time, or who are themselves alone at home after school or in the summer until a parent arrives home. Program materials include how to handle someone at the door or on the telephone, cooking safety, being properly prepared for weather emergencies, first aid basics, when it is appropriate to call 911, safety with young children, and common distractions to avoid when responsible for younger siblings.

Since the average on set of child sexual assault is between the ages of 6 and 8 years, this class is offered to boys and girls ages 5-9 years. Because children tend to be under-educated in this area, they can be easy targets. Partnering with HAVEN of Oakland County, Safety City U.S.A. hosts HAVEN Prevention specialists (educators) who present the facts of child sexual abuse in a sensitive and age-appropriate manner. This class introduces young children to personal safety and body ownership through the use of puppets, videotapes and role-playing.

First Aid Program for School Aged ChildrenThis program was developed to fulfill the requirements of the Cub Scout Readyman badge, but will be offered to any school aged group wishing to learn basic first aid. This class teaches what to do in case someone is injured, how to determine if the injury is one that can be helped at the site, or if professional help is required. The course describes how to get help and what to do until help arrives. The Heimlich maneuver is covered. Burn, poison and snake bite prevention are discussed, as well as swimming, bicycle, care passenger and home safety.
