Marital stressors are one of the most common complaints of parents of children with special needs. Conflicts in a marital relationship can cause significant stress, anxiety and unhappiness for both partners, which often compromises their ability to provide consistent care for their child. Learn about this and many other stressful situations that may arise during a workshop geared towards parents with of children with special needs.
"Relationship Enhancement for Parents of Children with Special Needs" is a 90-minute, five-week, workshop beginning Oct. 9 focusing on relationship enhancement for of children with special needs. Parents of children with physical, emotional, social and cognitive impairments, autism and related disorders are encouraged to attend. In this program, they will learn how marital stressors affect a child's well being as well as practical recommendations including specific exercises for improving communication, anxiety/stress management and conflict resolution.
"After learning these techniques, parents will be more confident and satisfied in their marital relationship, allowing for more effective and empathetic parenting," says Aimee Kotrba, Ph.D. She is a clinical psychologist specializing in the assessment and treatment of childhood psychological disorders, including autism spectrum disorders, anxiety, learning disorders, depression, ADHD and selective mutism. Dr. Kotrba also treats families experiencing the stresses involved in having a child with special needs.
This workshop is geared toward mothers and fathers of special needs children who need help managing their marital relationships. Traditional and blended families are welcome. However, both spouses must attend together.
The workshop begins October 9, from 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. and runs for five consecutive Thursdays at Beaumont's Center for Human Development at 1695 W. Twelve Mile Road (west of Woodward Avenue). The Center for Human Development at Beaumont Hospitals is a comprehensive facility for the diagnosis and treatment of learning and behavior problems in children. The center offers evaluations, counseling, tutoring, autism interventions, hearing impaired services and other specialized programs. It also features Beaumont doctors who are board certified in developmental-behavioral pediatrics and who address learning issues, attention problems, autism spectrum disorders and behavior problems.
