Having a baby can be one of life’s most exciting events, but a crying baby can put a damper on new parents’ joy.
A baby’s prolonged crying can lead to frustration, exhaustion, breastfeeding difficulties, marital stress and maternal depression. To help ease the stress, the Beaumont Parenting Program will be offering an innovative class,“The Happiest Baby on the Block.” The class, taught by a certified instructor, is based on the work of pediatrician and child development specialist Harvey Karp, M.D. It will include effective tactics that efficiently calm and help babies sleep. Other vital issues will be addressed to create greater parent awareness on the topics of sleep patterns, problems and safety.
Dr. Karp has done extensive research into infant crying, calming and sleeping.
"Having a baby can be one of life’s most wonderful joys, but it can also be very stressful,” says Elizabeth Clancy, group coordinator of the parenting program at Beaumont. “This class is to give new parents, as well as parents with prior experience, a helping hand.”
The class will be held on Wednesday,Feb. 27,from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. at Beaumont, Royal Oak in Classroom 2 on the lower level of the Administration Building, 3601 W. Thirteen Mile Road(west of Woodward Avenue). Cost will be $35 per couple and will include a complimentary DVD, calming sound CD and handouts. The class is sponsored by the Beaumont Parenting Program. Beaumont’s Parenting Program offers individual family support and groups for all new parents, single mothers, families of multiple births and neonatal intensive care unit families. In addition to a postpartum adjustment support group, the program offers follow-up breastfeeding support and classes on wills, financial planning, first aid, college funding and discipline.
