Beaumont Hospitals Announces Formation of Children's Hospital

Beaumont Hospitals announced today the formation of a new entity called the Beaumont Children's Hospital located at its Royal Oak (Mich.) hospital.

The Beaumont Children's Hospital offers 36 different pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties with 83 pediatric sub-specialists, a dedicated children's surgical team with board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists and more than 200 board-certified pediatricians.

"This announcement recognizes our specialized services, facilities and expertise developed over many years and our growing role as a regional resource for children's medical care," says M. Jeffrey Maisels, M.D., chairman, department of Pediatrics at Beaumont, Royal Oak and medical director, Pediatric Services.

Beaumont was accepted for membership by the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions in 2008 as a"children's hospital within a hospital," similar to the children's hospitals at Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic and the Massachusetts General Hospital for Children. Beaumont is the fifth NACHRI-designated children's hospital in the state and one of three in Southeast Michigan.

Beaumont Children's Hospital will be the primary pediatric teaching hospital of the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, further enhancing its standing as a children's hospital.

Beaumont is also the only Children's Miracle Network-affiliated hospital in Southeast Michigan. The Children's Miracle Network is a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children that supports 170 hospitals providing advanced medical care for children across the nation.

During the past 20 years, the Children's Miracle Network has raised funds to purchase equipment, begin essential programs for children and help build the infrastructure for the Beaumont Children's Hospital.

Generous philanthropic gifts from community members and foundations also helped to advance facilities, services and care for children at Beaumont. The hospital's specialized services for children include the William& Marie Carls Children's Medical Center at Beaumont, Royal Oak - an entire floor devoted to inpatient children's services offering family-centered care with facilities and equipment designed for the special needs of children. It includes a 40-bed Pediatric unit, an eight-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a 64-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The Ghesquiere Family Center for Children's Surgery at Beaumont, Royal Oak is a surgical center designed specifically for children, offering the latest technology and minimally invasive procedures and a highly trained children's surgical team, in an environment designed to surprise and delight children.

In October 2008, Beaumont received a gift  for future development of the Suzanne and Herbert Tyner Pediatric Emergency Center at Beaumont, Royal Oak, a separate emergency area designed and equipped for the special medical and emotional needs of children.

Beaumont Hospital, Troy and Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe also provide pediatric services and will serve as entry points for the specialty services of the Beaumont Children's Hospital at the Royal Oak hospital.  The Pediatric units at the Troy and Grosse Pointe hospitals offer advanced technology with pediatric-specialized nursing staff and board-certified pediatricians in a child-friendly environment with all-private rooms and accommodations for a family member to spend the night.   Beaumont, Troy also has a 15-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for high-risk, premature newborns.
