Beaumont Breaks Ground for Royal Oak Hospital Expansion: Tyners Pledge $5M Gift for Children

Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak broke ground today for a $204-million north expansion that will replace its Emergency Center and add an intensive care unit and operating rooms.

The 346,000-square-foot project called the North Pavilion includes a new Emergency Center with 173 private patient rooms, a 36-bed intensive care unit, four operating rooms and a powerhouse addition. The hospital's licensed bed capacity will remain at 1,061 beds. Completion is slated for 2011.

"Our development as an academic medical center and regional referral center for complex medical and surgical care is driving our need for new facilities to care for patients," says John D. Labriola, senior vice president and hospital director, Beaumont, Royal Oak."We expect the needs of our patients to continue growing in complexity and acuity as we move forward with the development of a medical school with Oakland University."

The project will replace the current 62,875-square-foot Emergency Center with an 88,000-square-foot Emergency Center with private rooms that are nearly 70 percent larger than existing treatment spaces to support advanced monitoring and treatment technology and encourage family involvement during a patient's emergency visit.

"The new facility will help us to enhance efficiency of care and privacy for our patients, as well as meet the growing demand for emergency care at Beaumont," says Jedd Roe, M.D., chairman, Emergency Medicine.

The new Emergency Center will include the Suzanne and Herbert Tyner Pediatric Emergency Center, a separate 24-room area designed and equipped especially for children offering privacy, security and child and family-centered care. The area will also include a six-bed Pediatric Observation Area for children who require further evaluation and testing before returning home.

The Pediatric Emergency Center is being established through a $5 million gift from Suzanne and Herbert Tyner of Bloomfield Hills, Mich. (see related press release). 

Beaumont's construction and design team for the North Pavilion includes: Beaumont Services Company, project management;Turner Construction Company, construction management; Harley Ellis Devereaux, architect; Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum Inc, design.

Beaumont, Royal Oak is a major academic, research and referral center with Level I trauma designation and the highest-volume emergency center in the state. The hospital ranks first in the United States for inpatient admissions and second for surgical volume. Beaumont, Royal Oak is named in eight medical specialties on the 2008 U.S. News& World Report's"America's Best Hospitals" list.
