Beaumont, Royal Oak appoints new chief of pediatric neurosurgery

Holly S. Gilmer, M.D., has been named the chief of pediatric neurosurgery at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak.

Before joining Beaumont, Dr. Gilmer was a neurosurgeon on the staff of the Detroit Medical Center's Harper, Hutzel, Detroit Receiving and Children's Hospital of Michigan. She is an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Dr. Gilmer earned her bachelor's degree in English at Harvard University and attended the University of Michigan Medical School. She completed her residency in neurological surgery at the University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. In addition, Dr. Gilmer completed fellowships in neurosurgery at Louisiana State University Medical Center and pediatric neurosurgery at Children's Hospital of Michigan.

Dr. Gilmer has a special interest in hydrocephalus, neuro-oncology and craniofacial reconstruction. She also specializes in adult and pediatric peripheral nerve surgery.

She lives in Detroit.

Beaumont's neurosurgeons offer a complete array of procedures, including acute endovascular and surgical care of stroke and aneurysms; minimally invasive back surgery; brain tumor removal; cranial reconstruction; shunts; arteriovenous malformation removal; implantation of electrical stimulators for movement disorders; and microsurgery for trigeminal neuralgia. They also provide neuro-intensive care management for head and spinal cord injuries. Using state-of-the-art technology including Gamma Knife, Omnibeam® therapy and advanced endoscopic techniques, neurosurgeons can treat brain tumors without invasive surgery.

Dr. Gilmer will be joining neurosurgeons Karol Zakalik, M.D., Satish Krishnamurthy, M.D. and Daniel Pieper, M.D. in caring for the neurosurgery needs of children at Beaumont. All four are board-certified, fellowship-trained pediatric neurosurgeons.

Beaumont is included on the U.S. News& World Report 2007 list of the"Top 50" hospitals in the country for neurology and neurosurgery, with Beaumont, Royal Oak ranking 35th.

Surgeons at Beaumont Hospitals performed 85,678 surgeries in 2007. The Royal Oak hospital is the second highest-volume surgical center in the nation, according to the American Hospital Association.

Beaumont is an associate member of the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions, recognizing its expertise in medical care of children.
