Ghesquiere Family Center for Children's Surgery

The Ghesquiere Family Center for Children’s Surgery opened in 2007, fulfilling our vision for a dedicated facility where children could receive highly specialized surgical care in a family-centered, child-friendly place. The center offers the most advanced technology, minimally invasive surgical procedures, and a highly trained children’s surgery team, including dedicated pediatric nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologists in an atmosphere designed specially for children. Specialties represented in the center include:

  • general surgery
  • ear, nose and throat
  • ophthalmology
  • orthopedics
  • urology

In the Ghesquiere Family Center’s first full year of operation, 3,743 surgical procedures were performed. That number rose to 4,825 procedures in the first nine months of 2008.

Six operating rooms supported by seven semi-private preoperative rooms and 12 post-anesthesia care spaces comprise the suite. A child-focused waiting room and a cozy preoperative play area help relieve anxiety before procedures. Beaumont Children’s Hospital partnered with the art teachers and students of Cranbrook Schools to create an environment that is uniquely and solely dedicated to children.

By providing advanced treatment in a setting that fosters compassionate support and full family participation and communication, the Center meets the unique physical, emotional and social needs of the children it serves. Special touches brighten the 16,000-square-foot center and help reduce anxiety:

  • A “river” floor and twinkling “stars” overhead
  • Red wagons to transport small children
  • Portable DVD players
  • Decorative frames around doorways to semiprivate preoperative rooms

The center is conveniently located on the second floor of the central tower at the Beaumont, Royal Oak, campus. It is most easily accessed from the second floor skywalk in the south parking deck. The center is near the William & Marie Carls Children’s Medical Center, where pediatric patients from premature newborns to teenagers receive state-of-the-art pediatric, pediatric intensive care, and neonatal intensive care services.
